Ashley Avis is a filmmaker and passionate, longtime equestrian. She is the writer, director and editor of Black Beauty for Disney+, starring Oscar winner Kate Winslet as the voice of Beauty, Mackenzie Foy as Jo Green, and Iain Glen as John Manly. In the modern day reimagining of Anna Sewell’s powerful, timeless classic – Beauty is born into the world a wild horse, rounded up and taken away from her family. Ashley hopes to parallel Anna’s original intentions to give voices to the horses of our time today.

She runs boutique production company Winterstone Pictures in Los Angeles alongside her husband and producing partner Edward Winters. In 2019, after filming a roundup in Nevada, Ashley and Ed adopted two wild horses who will become future WBF Ambassadors, Zephyra (named for “goddess of the West wind”) and Zion (her “sun”).

Upcoming projects include writing, creating and show running the equestrian series Breyer Hollow for Imagine Entertainment’s Executive Producers Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, and Stephanie Sperber; as well as the documentary Wild Beauty: Mustang Spirit of the West (2022).

Ashley’s great hope is to illuminate important issues horses are going through today through the platform of her film projects, while reaching a younger demographic through positive messaging and education.
